What is a Lab Grown or Lab Created Diamond?
by Manpreet Rajpal
Lab-Created or Lab-Grown diamonds are ethically sourced alternative diamonds to traditional diamonds. They cost about 30 to 40 percent less and indistinguishable from the natural mined diamonds to the naked eye. The only difference between the natural mined diamonds and the lab created diamonds is in its creation process. Also known as engineered diamonds/cultured diamonds/Synthetic or man made diamonds, these are “grown” inside a lab with advanced technology and in controlled environments with replicated conditions under which diamonds naturally develop beneath the Earth’s crust. This process creates man-made diamond that have all the same physical and chemical properties of a mined diamond. A diamond is a diamond whether naturally mined or engineered. Lab-Created diamonds are not fakes or cubic zirconias. Sometimes, Lab-Created diamonds are referred to as synthetic diamonds. While not technically inaccurate, term “synthetic” may be the reason people believe lab-created diamonds are “fake.” But the man made diamonds are as good as the real diamonds. Lab diamonds can only be distinguished from natural diamonds using specialized equipment that can detect the minor differences in trace elements and crystal growth.

Lab-Created Diamonds Vs. Mined Diamonds
No doubt the Lab-Created diamond is gaining popularity, it is important to understand that a diamond is a diamond. The decision is a personal preference based on various decision making factors which involve the pricing and environment. You can choose a mined diamond because it is found in nature or go with Lab-Created route because it is more relevant to a modern, technological and environment conscious world. You may want to figure out which type of diamond is “better,” but the truth is mined diamonds and Lab-Created diamonds are not meant to compete with each other. Lab-Created diamond or mines diamonds are both beautiful and represent love. The true significance of the diamond you choose isn’t in its origin, price, size or grade. It is in the moments and feelings that the diamond will be used for in order to represent love.
How are Lab-Created Diamonds Certified and Graded?
Per federal regulation, the laboratory grown diamond’s girdle is laser inscribed with the report number as well as the words “lab grown.” These steps are taken in the interest of clear delineation for consumers. This identifier is not visible to the naked eye, but guarantees that your diamond is a genuine lab-creation. Each lab diamond comes with a laboratory grown diamond report issued from the International Gemological Institute (IGI). The institute will grade and certify to ensure that your diamond was ethically grown with minimal environmental impact.
